Cambridge has the highest levels of cycling in the UK, with about 25% of commuter journeys and an estimated 20% of journeys in general.
Cambridge was awarded Cycling Demonstration Town status in 2008 and that led to £5 million investment in cycling over a 3 year period.
There are many good quality facilities for cyclists and walkers, e.g. the many specialised bridges which create shortcuts to many areas. But there are also many problems remaining, and a legacy of car-orientated streets.
The main group campaigning for cycling in the area is Cambridge Cycling Campaign, the largest group outside London.
Two of their members are the creators of CycleStreets, and the system is based on the journey planner and photomap which was launched in June 2006 on Cambridge Cycling Campaign's website.
CTC Cambridge organize regular rides in the area.

This should be a through route for cycling (ideally with a link across St Matthew's Piece from York St), if anyone at the city council or Anglia Ruskin University had actually thought about the clousre at the far end.
Cambridge City Council seems to have updated its trike - www.camcycle.org.uk/newsletters/87/article7.html
Cycle parking continues to be heavily used during roofing works while there is scaffolding at our house.
Two good-sized banks of new cycle parking, and preparations for the reopening of Kettles Yard - the two may be related.
The council has found 50p down the back of the sofa and at last repainted the shared-use markings which had vanished years ago.
The County RoW officer says that local residents object to the surface of the Grantchester Meadows path here being repaired "because it would encourage parking". Well the state of it clearly doesn't deter parking, people park on the bits wi ... [more]
The bus driver did not break the law here. Toucan crossing appears to show 'green man' at the same time that the bus driver receives a green light. In fact the green man is for the crossing parallel to the bus, off to the left of the photo. ... [more]
Newly constructed Cross City Cycling scheme but the '2.2 metre wide' refuge is considerably narrowed by the poor placement of poles. And seems to be a trash collection point as well (probably due to the wind).
No cycle parking except ... (so probably unenforceable) At least it suggests a place to park or stand your cycle around the corner.
"The Courtyard" which sounds nice is actually more of a motor vehicle storage facility. The only cycle parking is against the walls.
Large area of council run garages well lit and look like they've had a recent refresh compared to #63227.
We’ve come into the city to watch Swan Lake at the CornEx. The Grand Arcade cycle park is closed but car park open. https://twitter.com/simon_nuttall/status/947884118616039430
Just one of the potholes dotting Bridge Street which was resurfaced not that long ago. They are all in the middle of the road and more are appearing. (It has been reported.)
It's a sign! This would be far, far better if, for example, they'd put a large fascia board style sign over the entrance. You need to be able to see it from several metres away.
New cut-through from Tenison Road to Cambridge station Added to osm: http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/548378604
For as long as I can remember the end of Red Cross Lane has been made awkward to negotiate by anybody trying to get through to Addenbrookes from the East by bike - gated, no dropped kerbs, rough surface, barriers to stop you accessing the r ... [more]

Close up of paving light. This one is, obviously, not working but it does mean you can see how small they are. (LED bulb?) See also #95284
These would need to be viewed in the dark but these small lights seem to be quite effective, but subtle. An idea for more rural locations, perhaps?
After bikes being here as long as anyone can remember the new racks nearby #95242 have given this church the opportunity to ban them.
Good to see bike racks back in this location though I still believe Sheffield stands would have been better.
Good new route from Cambridge Regional College to Cambridge North station - but there's absolutely no signage from one to the other, and no indication that everyone has to change sides here. The usual lack of joined-up thinking and follow-t ... [more]
Two bikes are parked here, one against the lamppost and the other against the decapitated sewer vent and there's a double yellow line in between. What an excellent place for some cycle parking stands! See #95248.
You can see why people turn left to the over-size bike parking instead of taking their bikes up the ramp - poor signage, the typical thing of just banning things rather than offering positive guidance.
Spokes cycle service have been providing a weekly service to Churchill College for the last 23 years, but is to retire at the end of 2017.
Decent temporary cycle path (and fence) put in at last, after the developers tried to get away with doing nothing. The damage done is visible to the right.
This used to be thick with trees but also a fairly awful / steep path link that the college decided it had to make worse with chicanes & a cyclists dismount sign. Unsure what's up, but it's all gone now (the sign has since been removed e ... [more]
A bus driver who is happy to block a lane dedicated to cycles while waiting to pass other traffic in a lane dedicated to cycles and buses. Dog in the manger?
Double yellows! Great to be able to drive or cycle round this bend in Blinco Grove now without being terrified of being hit head on. https://t.co/QI74Rb16vy
Bike racks in good use including by a couple of Ofo bikes. Bins occupy the space where one of the racks was lost to a ground anchor which was not properly installed.
Cycle racks bent - presumably by being struck by motor vehicles either backing or turning. Without bollards or kerbs to protect them racks are prone to this type of damage.
Is it one decade or two since the Kite area was closed to through traffic? And the council still hasn't managed to add an Except Cycles plate to this sign. I do wonder why Cambridge has a reputation for being cycle-friendly.
Notice on the end of the bike racks. It's worded a little ambiguously so it could mean they're going to remove the racks (doubt it for such a short time) or that they will be unavailable to use, which seems more likely. Either way, the road ... [more]
To be honest, I'm not sure which bit of road they're talking about closing temporarily. Where is no 19? I'm guessing it's the footpath in front of the University Arms Hotel. ETA: it is. They've closed the cycle bypass lane round the closur ... [more]
Somebody didn't use a spell checker... (Also, sign for info.) Edit to add: Spelling now corrected and the date changed to 29th Oct.
For anyone unaware, the grubbier looking paving slabs to the left indicate how wide this passage way to M&S used to be. It looks brilliant now.
More recently the county has painted a left-turn arrow in the left-turn lane, and it looks like they are adding ASLs to the junction. This is still, however, a terribly dangerous junction design because it tells people cycling that they ... [more]
