East Road is about to be resurfaced, between the junction with Mill Road and the junction with St Matthew's Street, by Cambridgeshire County Council in April 2013, at a cost of £500,000.
Cambridge Cycling Campaign is calling for the addition of cycle lanes along the entire length of the resurfaced area. These would be queue-busting lanes, enabling people to bypass the queuing traffic that is present for significant periods of the day. They would be advisory, so could be installed experimentally and without any need for a TRO.
Advisory cycle lanes would be a 'quick win' while resurfacing is done, but the whole Newnham to Newmarket Road stretch in future needs a more comprehensive, high-quality cycle route that would encourage a shift of people from cars to bikes. Cambridge Cycling Campaign is developing proposals for this.
