Entrance to the cycle store at Parkside police station. I attended recently looking for two of my bikes which have recently been stolen. I found that the opening hours were not as advertised, and when getting no reply at the door the front desk were unable to give any advice on when the store might be open again. When I did see inside I was surprised to find only ten or so bikes from the last two weeks. All were in a very poor condition. This let me know that the police are recovering very few bikes, and those they are recovering are not the high value ones which I suspect are leaving the city.

At the August 2008 North Area Committee meeting Cllr Upstone asked about how cycle crime was to be tackled, suggesting that the police should focus on organised and bulk cycle thefts. The police said they did not believe there was any organised/bulk element to cycle thefts in Cambridge: “there is no white van full of bikes leaving the city every week”. I do not think this is credible, and support Cllr Upstone's suggestion and would like to have seen him make it a formal police priority, though I can see that would have been difficult given the police's stance.
