The senior engineer told me that they calculated the distance to London not along the Sustrans National Cycle Network route 11, but by using the AA car route planner :-(
(This was also the same engineer who said that the City Council would not sign to Fulbourn, 5 miles away, because there was no reciprocal arrangement with South Cambridgeshire District Council.)
This route has it as more like 67 miles on the quietest route:
