Bootham Bar, St Leonard's Place/High Petergate, York. A Pride sign restricts and obstructs the route for all users. The tarmac is max 67cm on the left and 80cm on the right. There is a height difference between the road and the paving on both sides. A person might be 70cm. A cyclist 80cm. But these are stationary widths and without walking aids, buggies, panniers... You don’t cycle/walk/wheelchair/push a buggy right up against any object fixed (the wall) or unfixed (the sign). The accepted reduction in usable width of a route for objects of these heights is between 25cm and 50cm. Clear. The minimum width requirement for an electric wheelchair or a ‘chair guided by a pedestrian is 150cm. These ‘event’ signs make moving around the city difficult. They reduce the convenience of active travel. They are also visually unappealing. They reduce the attractiveness of cycling, walking, wheelchairing. Plus, I’ve asked CYC for help in preventing obstruction of the route by drivers (see: #182575). But the council is itself guilty of obstructing a route it put in/opened up in March 2020 (yorkcyclecampaign.bike/2020/03/03/opening-high-petergate/~:text=As%20of%20yesterday%20(03%2F03,Traffic%20Regulation%20Order%20(ETRO).
