[Image taken 4.2.23] Esplanade cycle parking, West Esplanade/Wellington Row (below Lendal Bridge), York. These toast rack Sheffields (see also: #190736) are broken. The last support has been removed. But this leaves a substantial trip hazard. Toast racks almost always have an upstand. This is a trip hazard for users. Plus you have to lift the cycle over two metal bars. Further, if the wheelbase of your machine is not long enough to straddle both linking rails one wheel of the cycle will be positioned on the rounded top of one. They cycle will try to roll forward or backwards and be unstable. The rails here are a wasted opportunity. If the final support were free standing (best practice) this ‘end of rack’ area could be used for a larger rig or for a group sharing a lock/locks. Other image here today and links: #190735.
