[NOTE I am unable to place this image correctly on street view] The spacing/positioning of the new cycle symbols. Context and links: #190890. Measures are urgently needed: for people too afraid to cycle over the bridges (see: #166269), for those who do, but also for the safety of drivers. See 'My experience' below.
My experience:
On Thursday 19 January 2023, two of us - both adults - were cycling over Lendal Bridge towards Rougier Street.
(Using Scarborough Bridge was not an option as the riverside route was closed due to high water.)
It was 15.30, and clear weather. The sun was not in our eyes.
We were cycling one behind the other in the centre of the carriageway. There is no room for a motor vehicle to safely overtake another road user if there is oncoming traffic/if there is the possibility of oncoming vehicles.
As we neared the junction with Rougier Street – perhaps 50ft away – I could hear an engine behind me. It was loud. Clearly the vehicle was moving fast. It was obvious that although I could see a car coming from the corner towards the bridge on the gyratory the driver behind me was not going to slow down. She/he was going to pass. I had no option other than to swing into the kerb. I then watched as the driver of the vehicle passed the person ahead of me ** at the same time ** as the car that was oncoming reached that cyclist.
We were shaken.
The oncoming driver must have been too.
This is among the worst of the fast- close-passes I have experienced.
