[Image taken 11.2.23] Micklegate, York. The buildouts with the Sheffield racks look like a sop... They facilitate car parking. What if the arrangement were reversed? Two spaces off-road for motor vehicles and all the onstreet spaces for cycle parking… Parallel to the kerb to accommodate a lot more cycles and a wider range of rigs… ‘York’ cycles for transporting animals, dependants, goods, and cargo cycles for last-mile deliveries. They will need space to pull up and park just as motor vehicles do. And you won’t be able to lift them just as you can’t do with a motor vehicle. But they won’t pollute. And you will be able to make eye contact with the rider and see through, round and over the cycle. I believe they will return humanity to the streets.
What? Last mile e-cargo cycles? In York? Yup. There are already companies operating that replace motor vehicle deliveries. There are plans for a e-cargo cycle hub on Walmgate before the end of 2023. And likely two related facilities in the city centre. Other image this subject today and links: #190979.
