[Image taken 15.4.23] Village Street, York. As I was taking the two photos here today, first one then a second person, the neighbour of the first, stopped. Three of us stood talking on the ‘no footway’ side of the street. They live on this side of the road. One uses the motor traffic-free route: #193052. Both use the motor traffic-free link through the metal barriers in the image. It leads to several retail parks with fast food outlets, B&Q (DIY) and supermarkets among other reasons for visiting. To cross to the other side (just behind the camera position) and then to cross back (in the location the people in the photo) would likely be more dangerous than walking along the side of the road. It would certainly not be convenient. The second person goes shopping with her two year old grandson on his balance bike. This short stretch (30m? see: #193053) is the only bit that is unsafe – as they walk/roll along the carriageway. It is road users who should cede space in this residential area. Other image here today and links: #192970.
