Okay, I do have some sympathy for Royal Mail people delivering. They have to stop all over the place to deliver. However, the sheer laziness of this driver is mind boggling.

On either side of the road there is plenty of space to pull in. Why not use this space? Effectively, I had to completely stop for no reason.

And this is a sad indication of the way things are going in Cambridge. Royal Mail seem to have STOPPED doing cycle delivery. This is a town where a third of all journeys are done by bike and has probably some of the best infra (although still not good enough) in the country. Whilst other businesses are wiseing up to the benefits of doing local delivery by bike (national couriers deliver to a local cycle courier hub), the Royal Mail is going in the wrong direction.

The result is that my mail is delivered by a van that illegally stops in the cycle infra all the way up my road (they don't have dispensation to do this under the 1988 Road Traffic Act, ). It's delivered a lot later than before. And this increases pollution, and clearly increases traffic jams.

Now, it could be that postal workers have complained that their safety is at risk on bikes. And that H&S in the workplace has determined that this makes it too risky a prospect for a business to take on. In that case, it's reprehensible that this level is fine for the general public.

Also, it could simply be that Royal Mail have to retain a fleet of vans and realise they don't have to pay for the externalities of using a motor vehicle fleet so why should they bother doing anything else, take the taxpayer subsidy of road delivery and to hell with the rest of us.
