This is the first time I've tried these side cycle lanes at Cambridge Railway Station. They are there to enable people riding to get round a stopped bus, whilst it waits for the rising bollard to lower.
I came in directly after the bus, so couldn't have been closer. Once the bus had stopped I pulled into the side cycle lane and accelerated. However, I found myself suddenly really pushing as I realised the bus was about to pull off again, cutting my exit off.
Now, I'm not a super high speed rider, but I can get going quicker than most in Cambridge. If I have trouble passing a bus like this, isn't this lane completely pointless? Second, my attempt to really speed up is not a clever idea. And people doing the same as me here could put themselves is danger.
My suggestion is that if you have the misfortune to end up just behind a bus, do not bother using the side cycle lanes. It'll cost you a few seconds maybe.
